BMW Diesel Vs. Gas: Choosing the Best Way to Fuel

March 25, 2015  |  BMW EfficientDynamics, Technology

BMW 328d Clean Diesel

Recently a wave of modern diesel engines have appeared in the U.S., smashing the image of loud, dirty, smoking cars of old that kept the fuel type so unpopular here for decades. BMWs modern diesels are clean, quiet, don’t require extended start up times, and drive like a German engineered car should.  Portlanders, always eager to adopt new technology, have embraced the alternative fuel and every new diesel model BMW debuts quickly becomes a popular seller.  But while new diesel engines don’t come with the disadvantages of those from the 70s they do offer a unique driving experience to our gas models.

Fuel economy is huge selling point of a diesel BMW. Choosing the 328d delivers highway fuel economy of 45 miles per gallon, a 23% improvement over the comparable gas 328i. Diesel fuel tends to be priced closely to premium unleaded gas so the increased efficiency could be quite a savings for BMW buyers with long daily commutes.  Both cars are low emission vehicles that score highly on the EPA’s greenhouse gas emissions scale; however the diesel emits 14% less tailpipe CO2 emissions than the gas counterpart.

Performance wise all BMW offers 50/50 weight distribution and excellent handling dynamics across its entire range. Regardless of engine choice all of our cars provide a fun driving experience. Both the 328i and d have two liter twin scroll turbocharged engines with excellent throttle response and smooth power delivery. The gasoline fueled 328i produces 240 horsepower which propels it to 60 mph in a very quick 5.8 seconds. On the other hand the 328d puts out only 180 horsepower manages a 0-60 time of 7.4 seconds. The diesel car does make up for the power deficit by putting out 280 lb-ft of torque, 40 more than the gas model.  The extra force is apparent through the whole power band and gives the driver a feeling of confidence when traveling through the mountain roads of the Pacific Northwest.

Every BMW model, engine, and trim is a different take on what is the Ultimate Driving Machine so everyone will have a different take on what is right for them. Diesel engines are offered in the 3, 5, and 7 series sedans along with the X3 and X5 SAVs. The best way to experience the different models is to come in and drive each back to back. You might be surprised about which one you like best. Stop by our showroom at 10999 SW Canyon Road in Beaverton or give us a call at (503) 828-0936.

The Classic Wines Auction supports the good work of Oregon and Washington non-profit organizations by providing funds to help children and families in the area. Kuni BMW Track Day at PIR

October 9, 2014  |  Dealership News, Events/Programs, Featured, M

At time of writing this I have worked for Kuni BMW as a Photographer for two years. In all that time I can say the track day was by far the most fun I have had as an employee. Trust me I have had some fun days: my first wine event, taking out the Yas Marina Blue M3, my first drive in an Alpina ect.

Why was the track day so amazing?

Even though I photograph and move BMW’s every day, I have never really seen firsthand what they can do as far as performance. I have gotten to experience the beauty and comfort of the “Ultimate Driving Machine”, but really what does that mean if you haven’t REALLY driven one the way it was meant to be driven?

Our Videographer and I arrived at PIR with a few reservations. It was raining and we were not sure what kind of testing could be done on such a drizzly day. Also we were unsure how our clients would feel being photographed testing out the vehicles. There was a good chance we wouldn’t get much footage to work with.

We were wrong on both accounts. We were told the rain would most definitely not be stopping anything. If anything it would give an extra factor to seeing how well the cars handled. Secondly we were warmly welcomed by the drivers. We met some really great people that day. Several were long time customers who recounted their first BMW purchase at Kuni. We reminisced over past Kuni events and talked about the different cars they owned or purchased for their family members. They allowed us to ride along as they tested limits on the Auto Cross course and thrilled us on the track as they hugged corners and pushed the limits of speed on the straight away.

The rain passed right after the drivers meeting, and while it was cloudy the rain stayed away the whole event. The group was split in two, one half went to the follow along course the track, and the other went to the Auto Cross track.

At the auto cross track there was a brief meeting for everyone about how to drive on the course. Walkie talkies were put in each car and everyone went out for a first run together to learn the course and understand the meaning of the different cones.

After that everyone lined up to test out the different models.

After many grins and a good time was had by all, we took a lunch break and sat reliving all the glory of properly stopping in the box and that time when someone hit a cone and I miraculously got that instant in camera:

After lunch it was our turn at the ride along. Drivers took turns in the different models of cars following along on the track with a professional driver in the lead.

A fantastic day was had by all. We thank everyone that came out and participated. Also a big thank you to the clients for allowing us to participate along with you and take photos!

We hope there will be another track day soon!
