2012 X6

Brief History of BMW X6

The BMW X6, with its debut in 2007, is the latest of BMW’s SAV models. It is unique from the X3 and X5 in that it is a SAV styled in a coupe.  It keeps the characteristics of the SAV with the high ground clearance, all wheel drive, large wheels and tires, yet it has the coupe style with a sporty, sloping roof.

The X6 Today
The X6′s innovative, sporty look reflects the components that give it a sports car-like driving feel that’s not usually associated with AWD vehicles.  In addition to a powerful and taut suspension, BMW’s revolutionary Dynamic Performace Control technology can transfer power between the rear wheels for quick high-performance cornering.  Adaptive Drive, which is included in the optional Sport Package, adds Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) and Electronic Damping Control (EDC) to the mix.  ARS helps eliminate body roll keeping the vehicle level, stable and agile; EDC continuously adjusts the shock absorbers from the softest to the firmest setting for outstanding compliance and body control.  In the X6, it all comes together in a unique driving experience.

X6 xDrive35i
Twin-turbo direct injection inline 6-cylinder
300 horsepower
This revolutionary inline six-cylinder Advanced Turbo powerplant, named “International Engine of the Year” in 2008, 2008 and 2009, offers an outstanding 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, launching the X6 xDrive35i from 0-60 in 6.5 exhilarating seconds.  It not only delivers thrilling driving, but is also one of the most fuel-efficient six-cylinder engines on the market.

X6 xDrive50i
Twin-turbo direct injection V-8
400 horsepower
BMW engineers developed a V-8 for the X6 xDrive50i that features cutting-edge Advanced Turbo power for reliable, virtually lag-free performance and acceleration in any situation.  Both brawny and efficient, this 400-hp engine generates 450 lb-ft of torque to propel the X6 xDrive50i from 0-60 in a scant 5.3 seconds.

X6, xDrive, Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive
Unlike other all-wheel-drive systems, we’ve built xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system with rear-wheel bias for surefooted grip on slick or uneven roads, without sacrificing the feel of rear-wheel drive.  It smartly sends power to the wheel or wheels with the surest footing – and it does so in milliseconds.  That means under normal conditions, drive forces are spread out with a rear-wheel bias.  But the moment the system senses excessive wheel slip, it subtly shifts torque to meet the changing conditions, offering maximum available traction and superior handling on all surfaces – despite the weather conditions.

Accolades
“It will come as little surprise that the X6 is a very good driver. It has much more in common with a sport sedan than with any SUV, with typically BMW traits: direct steering, strong brakes, firm damping, and superb body control.”
“… the twin-turbo inline-six in our recent tester proved to be all the engine this brute needs. Mated to BMW’s excellent six-speed automatic transmission, it sounds absolutely terrific when you leg the throttle, and it did not pause to catch its breath when I pushed the X6 to an indicated 122 mph, at which point it clearly was ready for more, even if my driving record and I weren’t.”
“[I am] amazed at the X6′s capabilities, amazed at its refinement, amazed at its easy speed and magic rear differential…”
“[the X6 xDrive35i] is amazing to drive. It’s kind of remarkable, in fact, how well it performs. BMW’s latest SUV pounds down a heaving country highway with more composure and more tail-wagging sureness than a 335xi or an X5, and more speed than some purpose-built sports cars.”
Automobile Magazine, August 2008

“THE HIGHS: Menacing styling, brilliant handling (for an SUV), runs with an X5 V-8.”
“…we found it surprisingly spacious and comfortable – perfect for four six-plus-footers, in fact, with plenty of stowage room in the long cargo area.”
“[the X6 xDrive50i] laps the Nürburgring within a couple seconds of the previous-gen (E46) M3. SUVs running with M3s? What’s our ute-crazed automotive world come to?
“Behind the wheel of either version of the X6 is typical BMW goodness, including supportive and comfortable seats that place the driver in a perfect position to work the fat leather steering wheel and appreciate its agreeable heft and feedback.”
“Out on the road, it takes a few run-throughs before the driver realizes just how fast the X6 can be pitched into corners. The ride is firm but not prohibitively so, even over the most severe roads.”
Car and Drive, August 2008

“The X6’s blistering acceleration leaves nothing to complain about. It’s slightly faster than the FX50, beating the Infiniti to the 60-mph and quarter-mile markers by 0.3 second.”
“DPC [Dynamic Performance Control] works at all speeds, not just during insane cornering, and it helps steer the car using the rear wheels even in normal driving. As a result, the X6 feels hundreds of pounds lighter on its feet… The biggest breakthrough of DPC, however, is how it interfaces with DSC (stability control). Rather than cutting power and applying brakes to steer the car, the combined systems first try to correct the X6’s path using torque vectoring. Theresult is that the vehicle simply turns smoothly.”
“The X6’s performance on a racetrack is downright shocking.”
Automobile Magazine, July 2008
