Is GINA the BMW of the Future?

BMW’s Maximum Freedom of Creativity – GINA
BMW offers not just a new concept  but rather “a whole new approach to automotive design” in this car known as GINA (Geometry and Functions In “N” Adaptions).   The designers of this car sought to obliterate all previously held notions of car design that has for years been set in stone.  They asked the questions, “Does a car roof really have to rest on pillars and be bordered by windows?  Do all functions have to be visible at all times, even when they are not needed?  How many personalization options does my car offer?  Are there any possible alternatives to the rigid body shell made of steel or plastic?”

The result of asking these questions led to a car like none other.  From the outside to the inside, GINA is not the traditional car.  First, the “skin” of this BMW is a flexible fabric that is particularly resistant to expansion, and both durable and flexible.  Beneath this unusual exterior lies a strong light aluminum frame that can be reshaped with both electric and hydraulic controls, according to the driver’s preference.  For example, when the headlights are inactive, they are disclosed in the car’s skin, but when active, the fabric moves separately from the trademark BMW grille to expose the double lights.  Even the spoiler rises when traveling over a certain speed, the kidney grille widens, and the side air intakes narrow.  The functions of the car are only offered if and when they are actually required.

Conventional cars are comprised of doors, wheel arches, a trunk lid, engine hood and roof, but GINA is unique in that it is comprised of just four components: a front panel, two side panels, and a rear deck panel.  As BMW states, “The drastic re-interpretation of familiar functionality and structure means that drivers have a completely new experience when they handle their car.  Reducing the car to its essentials and adapting it to the driver’s requirements enhances the car’s emotional impact and achieves a crucial objective of the GINA philosophy.”
