BMW continues to turn “green” and “driving” into compatible words. Currently they are finessing one of many projects, including a smaller, more fuel-efficeint three-cylinder engine that will likely appear in upcoming models. As fuel prices rise and concerns increase regarding the environment, automakers over the globe will be making a big mistake not to improve their products’ efficiency. Even if consumers continue to support the gas-guzzler market, the government announced in April that carmakers must produce automobiles that make the minimum of 35.5 mpg by year 2016.
BMW’s first models to receive the new engine should be the upcoming 1-Series and possibly the Z2. There are promises from insiders that the new engine will not be a low-performer, but instead will be a sporty and refined 500cc per cylinder engine. In addition, it will boast direct injection and turbocharge to maximize performance levels.
Previous designs of compact engines have had issues with noise and vibration levels, but BMW is working to overcome these.
The horsepower output is expected to be between 120 and 180 horsepower, with an astonishing 4o plus miles per gallon in fuel economy! The three cylinder diesel engine featured in the 2009 Vision EfficientDynamics concept car reaches up to 163 horsepower. In addition to the three cylinder engine, a four cylinder engine is also in the making, predicting an impressive 273 to 321 horsepower.
